Set & Forget

Focus your subconscious on solving a problem and leave your conscious mind free to do other work.

Rationale

Some researchers support the view that at least some kinds of creativity are very hard to create as required. Their work points to the importance of allowing the subconscious to have time for incubation on a problem before illumination can occur. The ‘set and forget’ technique is based on this body of research.

Methodology P+

  1. Collect all the available information about a particular problem context.
  2. Build an emotional attachment to the success of managing this problem.
  3. Imagine how you feel as you realise you have solved this problem.
  4. See in your mind’s eye how the new situation would look.
  5. Hear in your mind what you and others would say.
  6. Resolve that you will develop a specific number of ways to attack this problem that can be developed into problem definition statements. For moderately difficult or important problems this might be five. More difficult or important problems could require 20 or even 50 different specific problem approaches.
  7. Now set a date and time for your subconscious mind to come back with a way to start on the problem. This is the same process that you use to get your subconscious to wake you up when you do not use an alarm.
  8. Write down your goal to define this problem in the following format: “I will develop _problem definitions for the _situation by _date.”
  9. As you do this remember to get your subconscious involved by imagining vividly the vision, words and feelings you will experience when the problem is solved.
  10. Now forget about the problem in your conscious mind as best you can, until the answer is due.
  11. If you have attached enough emotion to solving the problem you should notice that new stimulus that is apparent as you go about your other business gets related to the problem.
  12. At the due date you will be able to list as many problem definitions as you decided you would.

Methodology P-

  1. Start by having constructed a list of problem definitions for a particular problem context.
  2. Build an emotional attachment to the success of managing this problem.
  3. Imagine how you feel as you realise you have solved this problem.
  4. See in your mind’s eye how the new situation would look.
  5. Hear in your mind what you and others would say.
  6. Resolve that you will identify which of these problem definitions are the best to focus your problem solving efforts on.
  7. Now set a date and time for your subconscious mind to come back with a decision. This is the same process that you use to get your subconscious to wake you up when you do not use an alarm.
  8. Write down your goal to define this problem in the following format: “I will choose the best problem definitions for the _situation by _date.”
  12. At the due date you will just know the best problem definition(s) to use even if you cannot validate this.

  6. Resolve that you will develop a specific number of ideas to solve this problem. For moderately difficult or important problems this might be ten. More difficult or important problems could require 50 or even 100 different specific problem approaches.
  7. Now set a date and time for your subconscious mind to come back with ideas. This is the same process that you use to get your subconscious to wake you up when you do not use an alarm.
  8. Write down your goal to define this problem in the following format: “I will develop _ideas for the _situation by _date.”
  9. As you do this remember to get your subconscious involved by imagining vividly the vision, words and feelings you will experience when the problem is solved.

Methodology A+

  1. Collect all the available information about a particular problem context including a list of specific ideas you intend to implement.
